Harwell Primary school has taken a very practical approach to the teaching and learning of Italian. They have used local native Italian speakers to help the children gain an understanding of how the language is spoken and what it sounds like.
The school has recently taken part in a project on ice cream with the children making labels and signs in Italian for an ice cream parlour. The then invited Italian waiters in to show them how to serve and clear up and ask questions in Italian. The project involved all aspects of the school and community from the children, to school staff, parents and families and local businesses.
The judges felt that this unique approach not only involved the community but excited and motivated the children to be active participants in their learning by being involved in practical language activities.
