Pontnewydd Primary School offers integrated Welsh language learning to all pupils. Children from reception are encouraged to speak Welsh in activities with registration being called in Welsh and the children answering in the Welsh language.
Children are encouraged to play games and tell stories through the Welsh language and the school has signs and displays of various levels throughout the school in both English and Welsh.
The children enjoy the learning and freely share their experiences with other learners and adults. Their knowledge from an early age is very competent with older children excelling in being bilingual.
The judges felt that Pontnewydd Primary School epitomises good practice through integrated learning combined with explicit and implicit teaching of Welsh. An inspirational school that helps the children reinforce language and heritage.
